Perry Warjiyo has resigned as governor of Bank Indonesia for personal reasons, the bank said today (July 27), in an unexpected move that analysts said would be watched closely by markets assessing what it might mean for the institution’s independence.

Indonesia’s official news agency reported that cabinet minister Prasetyo Hadi had announced Warjiyo’s resignation at a press conference attended by members of BI’s board of governors. “The president has accepted Mr Perry Warjiyo’s resignation
